Top cinema picks for February

Stuck for something to do this month? Fish out a mates Orange Wednesday and head off to the pictures to see one of these great films this month.

The Dallas Buyers Club (15)

This biographical drama stars Matthew McConaughey as aids sufferer Ron Woodroof who is told he only has thirty days left to live. He faces threats from the FDA after smuggling unapproved drugs into Mexico and selling them to other patients when he discovered they improved his symptoms. Also starring Jared Leto as a transgender woman, the film has received acting acclaim for Mcconaughey and Leto at the Golden Globes (Best Actor Motion Picture Drama, Best Supporting Actor Motion Picture – respectively), it has been nominated for six Oscars.

Cuban Fury (15)

This British comedy stars Nick Frost and Chris O’Dowd as two engineers fighting for the same girl, their boss. Bruce (Frost) reignites his passion for salsa dancing in a bid to win her over in a big dance competition.

Her (15)

Her is the critically acclaimed directional debut by Spike Jonez. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who, following a tricky divorce from his childhood sweetheart, falls in love with a computer system that has a female voice and personality, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. The film centres on his struggles as he comes to terms with the fact that his new ‘love’ is a machine.

The Monuments Men (12A)

Based on the book by Robert M. Edsel, this British German war film follows the story of an Allied group called the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives programme. They were instructed to save pieces of art and other important items and return them to their rightful owners before their destruction in World War 2 by Hitler. Written, directed and produced by George Clooney the film also stars Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and John Goodman.

Non-Stop (12A)

Upcoming American film starring Liam Neeson at his action hero best as federal air marshal Bill Marks who receives a series of threatening messages stating that a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes unless money is transferred to a secret bank account. When the account is found to be under Marks’ name and a bomb is discovered on the plane, he is braded the hijacker.
