For the first edition of Sports Saturday we have a big night tonight for fight fans.
Lamont Peterson, who beat Amir Khan back in 2011 via a controversial split decision, is going up against Lucas Matthysse in a light welterweight fight that will give a better indication of who is top dog in the division that is one of the most competitive in boxing today.
This will be Peterson’s second fight after coming back from a failed drugs test during the build up to a rematch with Khan, when he tested positive for a synthetic testosterone, resulting in him being stripped of the title he won in their first fight.
The boxing tonight will kick off at 9pm on Sky Sports 1 with a Prizefighter tournament as the lead in to the main card.
Over on ESPN tonight we’ll have some UFC action too, with Vitor Belfort and Luke Rockhold battling it out in Brazil to see who will be the next in line for a shot at the middleweight crown.
Belfort can’t seem to find himself in anything but an entertaining fight and coming off the back of a knockout win over Michael Bisping, the previous number 1 contender, it’s a pretty safe bet that this fight won’t buck the trend.
All in all this is going to be a great night for anyone interested in combat sports, and a great way to cap off a big couple of weeks in the sports world that saw some big retirements in football and some big playoff games in the NBA.
NEXT WEEK: we can look forward to some more NBA playoff games as we move into the conference finals as well as the Champions League final when Borussia Dortmund will take on Bayern Munich.
