Do something different with your summer!

University has finished and summer has begun. This means there are four long months ahead to relax and do very little…or it could mean you finally have the time to concentrate on chasing your dream career or travel to anywhere you please…

Here are a couple of suggestions to get you inspired:

Ever fancied being a film critic? This year the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Student Critics Award Jury are giving the opportunity for three lucky individuals to review a shortlisted programme of films, under the helpful eye of two established film critics. Not only will this develop your writing and critical skills to a high level it gives you the chance to win the Student Critics Award at the EIFF’s Award Ceremony on the 30th of June.

It is simple to apply just submit 400 words on a film or an aspect of cinema of your choosing. The email must include your name, address, contact details, institution and matriculation number. You should also be available to attend the EIFF from the 20 – 25th of June.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday the 23rd of May 2012 and should be sent to education@cmi-scotland.co.uk

Or maybe travelling tickles your fancy?

A conservation project concerning the protection of the native flauna and flora on a small island off the coast of southern California (called Catalina) needs you!

The Eco USA project is open to British and Irish residents aged 18 to 50, exclusively through BUNAC.

If you fancy camping out on an island and helping with trail maintenance, building and repairing fences, protecting native plant life and local endangered species, then this project is for you! Each volunteer will also be allocated free time which can be spent visiting the island’s beautiful beaches, hiking its walking trails, enjoying its many water sports, visiting the capital of Avalon or even going to Los Angeles, just an hour’s ferry ride away.

Departure dates are July 9th, August 20th, September 3rd and 17th and October 1st for 11-day projects and July 23rd for the 18-day project.  Spaces are limited and applications close approximately four weeks before each departure date, so early application is recommended.

Please email theedit@caledonian.ac.uk if you would like all the information on the project and to find out how to apply!

These are just two brilliant opportunities, have a search and find the perfect way to spend your summer this year! It all looks a lot better on your CV than just relaxing in the non-existent British sun…
